From the zone: Zappa transcription project

Daniel Bédard in Montréal did a really cool project:

“I challenged myself in trying to transcribe one FZ song a week for a year. That year came to an end last September and due to covid, I've been slowed down big time but still managed to reach my goal of 52 songs in a year.”

I love his copying style. Here's the whole pile:

Thanks a lot Todd! I think I remember seeing a few on your website, like "I'm A Beautiful Guy" or another one from "You Are What You Is". Am I mistaken?

Definitely that one, maybe some others-- Society Pages, maybe? I did write out the guitar solo section of Keep It Greasey, which Drum magazine published. In college I did the main part of the tune and brought it to my professor, and he said YOU DIDN'T WRITE OUT THE GUITAR SOLO? I was like MOTHERF- the tune is in 21/16....

Glad you got some stuff with David Logeman, he's a pretty underrated guy-- I actually prefer him to Vinnie now...

David is a monster drummer and I don't understand how he sort of went under the radar. The playing on "You Are What You Is" is spectacular.

Another one I like that doesn't get as much exposure is Aynsley Dunbar. His drumming is fantastic, nice grooves and chops.

I don't think I've heard him on anything but that one record, don't know what happened to him.

I missed the records with Aynsley Dunbar, somehow-- was a big Zappa fan for a long time, just didn't buy those albums. Which do you recommend?

For Aynsley stuff, I would recommend "Live at the Fillmore". Check out the intro to "Tears Begin To Fall", he plays some nice bass drum stuff there. And the whole "Mothers 70" is pretty cool too.
